So lets get into this and find out the truth about getting free from addiction.
How To Get Free From Addiction – My Story of Getting Free
Hello, My name Is Brian Priest and I struggled with addiction addiction for more than 23 years before I finally found the truth about getting free.
I went to Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Celebrate Recovery. Went to multiple treatment centers, inpatient an outpatient. And I’ve even been to see counselors and psychiatrists. I tried everything to quit using, but for some reason I just couldn’t beat it.
I started using drugs when I was 11 years old, and I battled addiction for over 23 years until one night while in a jail cell on my way to prison I found the answer. Or should I say it found me.
That night was November 28, 2003 and my life has never been the same since.
I have been brought up in church, and I have been taught the word of God since I was just a small child. And I have always continued to go to church, but I never really knew God.
While I was setting in my cell, I began reading the Bible that I had gotten from the Chaplin when I started praying.
I prayed, “God, I can’t do this anymore and If you will help me, I will live my life for you forever” and I surrendered to that right then and there.
What happened next can only be described as Holy. I had never experienced anything like it all. But a very soft and peaceful presence took the weight of the world from my shoulders.
Now I am going to show you exactly what I learned in just a few short months about how to get free from addiction that changed my entire outlook on addiction and recovery.
What Is Addiction?
Well that all depends on who you ask as to what answer you will get. But the biggest misconception is that addiction is a disease.
So, let’s make it clear right from the start. ADDICTION IS NOT A DISEASE.
Addiction is a learned behavior we choose. I’m not gonna argue what scientists or doctors say. But, you don’t just walk out the door and catch “crackhead”.
But, If you will stay with me. You will see what I mean.
Addiction isn’t just about drugs or alcohol. If you you look around you anywhere you go people are addicted to there phones, tablets, or computers like nothing else before. Am I to believe that if any one of, or all of these people decided to get a drink, that they are then going to be alcoholic?
I didn’t think so. Well That blows the disease theory out of the water doesn’t it.
Why? Because, it’s a learned behavior. And Behaviors have to change if you want to get free from addiction…
Let’s look at the 12 Steps used in recovery programs around the world, and see what the Bible says about each step.
How To Get Free From Addiction – Which Way To Go
My first real experience with recovery programs was when I checked into my first treatment center in 1995. One of the requirements was I had to attend AA, a 12 step program. While some of these programs are very helpful. They will never set you free.
The only way to get totally free is to surrender your life to Christ. The Bible says, “He whom the Son sets free, is truly free.” John 8:36
So Let’s compare.
The 12 Steps
What are the 12 steps of Alcoholic Anonymous?
The 12 steps are designed to be able to teach a person hoe to get free from addictions. But they fail to do so nearly every time. Here are the 12 steps as outlined in Alcoholics Anonymous.
- We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
- Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
- Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
- Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
- Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
- Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
- Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
- Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
- Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
- Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
- Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
- Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
Do They Work
These steps actually a solid idea. However, there are small problems with the theory which make it completely fallible. There are problems because they have tried make it work for people who refuse to admit to themselves that there is a God.
But without a greater power, your battle will be futile. And in their theory you can use anything you view stronger than you as a higher power. But there is a problem that because physical objects are useless when fighting addiction. You need real help.
Another thing that takes place in these 12 step program meetings is you daily affirm that you are an alcoholic or addict. And this is why there is so much failure in these types of programs. Because Addicts use, and if you tell yourself you’re an addict every day, you will most likely use again.
However for the alternative to work for you, you have to be ready to surrender your life to God. And so for the purpose of How to get free from addiction, we are going to choose God as our higher power.
How To Get Free From Addiction – The Biblical Way To Freedom
The Bible is the truth no matter ones opinion about it. Because not believing the truth doesn’t change it. And our addictions are the result of our sin. And there is only one remedy for sin, and that is God’s Son Jesus Christ.
What does the bible say about it all and how does Jesus free us from addiction? Well let’s look at it from the perspective of the 12 steps and see what the Bible says:
Biblical Alternative to the 12 Steps
Step 1: We admitted we were powerless over our addictions and compulsive behaviors, that our lives had become unmanageable.
Romans 7:18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
Step 2: We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Philippians 2:13 For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.
Step 3: We made a decision to turn our wills and our lives over to the care of God.
Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship
Step 4: We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Lamentations 3:40 Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.
Step 5: We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
James 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for each other that you may be healed.
Biblical 12 Steps Continued
Step 6: We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord and He will lift you up.
Step 7: We humbly asked Him to remove all our shortcomings.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Step 8: We made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
Luke 6:31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.
Step 9: We made direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
Matthew 5:23-24 Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.
Step 10: We continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
1 Corinthians 10:12 So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall.
Step 11: We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry it out.
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.
Step 12: Having had a spiritual experience as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
Galatians 6:1 Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.
